PROJECT 04 · SUSTAINABILITY

Phum Borann Village

Six partner clinics support small, underserved villages and the rural poor — and they need medicine, equipment, supplies, and infrastructure.

TRANSFORMING OPPORTUNITY

Kulen Mountain is the genesis of the Khmer Empire. We believe it can be the genesis of something else.

Phnom Kulen is sacred ground — the mountain where the Khmer Empire was founded and where the River of a Thousand Lingas still blesses the water flowing toward Angkor. Yet the villages on this mountain have long faced the same hard limits: no clean water, no schools within reach, no clinic, and almost no way to earn a living without leaving home.

Since 2016, Vision Cambodia has been changing that — village by village, project by project. What began as humanitarian relief has become something more durable: an economy. Today Kulen Mountain is where Vision Cambodia is leading the way in sustainable economic development, and Phum Borann Village is the proof that it works.

ONE THING LED TO THE NEXT

How opportunity compounds.

None of this was built all at once. Each project created the conditions for the next one — and every step is still running today.

STEP ONE

It started with a primary school

Children on the mountain had no school within walking distance. We built one — free, local, and staffed by Cambodians. Literacy became possible without leaving the village.

STEP TWO

Then the Light of Life Training Center

Educated children still faced parents with no trade. The training center added adult job and skills training — hospitality, weaving, construction, and services — for the disadvantaged.

STEP THREE

Which created Phum Borann Village

Trained villagers needed somewhere to work. So they built it themselves — an eco-village of homestays, bungalows, and cottages that now employs the very people who constructed it.

STEP FOUR

Which opened the door to Harvest Foods & lasting jobs

A village with a kitchen needs farmers. Harvest Foods Cambodia grew out of that demand — local food production, school meals, and steady income for rural families across the mountain.

Clean water, rural health care, and our partner clinics run alongside all four — because none of it holds without safe water and a clinic within reach.

Where sustainability becomes visible.

Phum Borann ("ancient village") is where our philosophy comes to life. Villagers constructed every homestay, bungalow, and cottage. Villagers cook, guide, and welcome the guests. Every stay creates jobs today and funds wells, schools, and clinics tomorrow.

Local jobs — construction, hospitality, kitchen, and guiding roles for villagers

Local economy — food, crafts, and services purchased from mountain families

Vision Cambodia — revenue flows back into humanitarian projects, sustaining the mission

We are intentionally staying small and personal — a village, not a resort complex — so growth strengthens the community instead of overwhelming it.

Stay in the village you helped build.

Homestays, bungalows, and cottages. Val's Kitchen. Jungle treks, waterfalls, and ancient temples. Bookings are handled by Kulen Eco Tours, our marketing partner — and every booking supports Vision Cambodia's work on the mountain.
